  There is a much cheaper way to process Acai and make Acai supplements - it is called spray dried Acai. The Spray Dried process involves heating the Acai to high temperatures to remove the water and spraying the Acai with carries such as maltodextrin. To put it bluntly - spray dried Acai is a terrible idea! The first problem with the spray dried process is that it requires heating the Acai to very high temperatures. The problem is that the high temperatures kill off many of the nutrients in the Acai. The second problem is that the spray dried process involves using a carrier agents such as maltodextrin to dry the Acai. In the end, 40% of the "Acai powder" is actually maltodextrin. So, if you see a spray dried Acai supplement that claims to have 500mg of Acai per capsule - it probably only has 300mg of actual Acai per capsule.
  Spray dried Acai powders, while cheap to buy, are vastly inferior to freeze dried Acai powders.

LOLLA WEATHER

  My favorite music star Dierks Bentley is opening for Brad Paisley this weekend at the First Bank Amphitheatre... and all around Chicago its outdoor music venues with Lollapalooza... so thought I'd blog a bit about the wicked heat and how music fans might make the most of it.
  NOTE: This picture of me and Dierks was taken in Philly a few years back --- it was Valentine's Day and the local radio DJs surprised me with a serenade... as I always say --- everytime I hear Dierks Bentley I think he's singing just to me!!! LOL Whatever music makes you happy this weekend... consider the heat that will dominating Chicago so you can enjoy the music experience and not end up miserable in the heat!
  Temperatures in the 90s with high humidities will be uncomfortable -- making it feel like 100 degrees at times... so drink a lot of WATER, wear loose - light colored fabrics, and stay in the shade! Temperatures can be several degrees cooler in the shade and taking breaks from the sun can bring relief and keep you from getting a nasty sunburn.

  The first ever Rock n Roll Half Marathon for Chicago is this sunday. 13.1 miles! I ran a Rock n Roll FULL Marathon in San Diego --- one of my favorite races ever -- there is a band EVERY MILE! 26 bands including a Smashing Pumpkins concert at the finish. So much fun... This weekend a special running guest is in town for the Chicago Debut of the Rock n Roll Half marathon ... the man who holds the American record for the half-marathon... 26-year-old Ryan Hall. (He won the US Marathon Trial in NY - finished 10th in the O Beijing Summer Games! And is the only American to break the one hour barrier in the Half Marathon.)
  BTW - (Thankfully he slowed down for me... his marathon PR is 2:06... my marathon PR is 4:06!!)
  On the run, Olympian Ryan Hall and I talked about running and (of course) the weather. He also told me about the amazing project he and his wife are working on together with TEAM WORLD VISION ---it's a program to bring clean water to places that don't have it in Africa.
  
  Ryan told me "I'll do millions of steps getting ready for a marathon, until i'm ready to run the marathon... all the steps, it all adds up...the small steps become the journey and that's what makes you have great race day...."
  Ryan's best race day was a new American record at the Beijing Olympics -- in sweltering heat. That's something he had trained for... and he says weather can play a big role in how your race day goes.
  Ryan said "I've had some gnarly days. We live in the mountains (Big Bear, CA) there are extremes there and I guess you guys know about that living in Chicago. I was running today and I'm like how do they set records here with the changing weather but in like the Chicago Marathon they're set records so the weather can be on your side. I don't like running in the wind, it's the worst, wind ruins everything."
  "Hopefully that's what that happens on Sunday for the runners... their training comes together and that's where it can be a magical race day... that day when you feel like you're floating... that's how it felt for me.... when i set the American record," Ryan Hall.
  This Sunday runners can expect light winds, 60s, nearly perfect race conditions... and hall says when everything comes together that's when magic happens....
  Personally, I found Ryan to be inspiring. He and his (wonderfully talented elite running) wife Sara are doing much MUCH more than making their mark on the American running scene.... which include their charitable work, their encouragement to other runners, and their genuine love of life.... As Ryan said to me... someone will eventually break my record... But the things Ryan Hall does to make the world a better place using the Running Platform will have a exponential and lasting impression that no record book can contain!

  Summer Weather Workshop for Kids
  
  Do you know a child who is fascinated by weather and would like to learn more about weather maps, clouds, and storms? The National Weather Service (NWS) will be hosting a Summer Weather Workshop for Kids on Thursday August 6 at the NWS office in Romeoville. There will be two sessions; 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM. The program is for middle and junior high students who will be entering 5^th through 8^th grade this fall.
  
  The program is free but class size is limited.
  
  In the class, students will;
  - Get a tour of the NWS office, including a demonstration of Doppler radar
  - Learn about basic weather concepts, high and low pressure, fronts
  - Learn how clouds form
  - Work with weather maps
  - Receive safety information for severe storms and tornadoes
  - Issue a mock tornado warning
  - Do hands-on activities
  - Find out about career opportunities in meteorology

  What's up with the weather?
  When meteorologists make projections for long term forecasts one of the key factors is ocean water patterns. There are two patterns that are familar to most people: La Nina and El Nino We have been in a weakening La Nina this past Winter and Spring... which has led to some cool, wet weather here in Chicago! Now the shift has started to the warming of the ocean waters and NOAA has declared the development of an El Nino. The development of this weather pattern allows forecasters to make projections on more than just weather patterns--- El Nino cycles have had certain impacts in the past that could repeat themselves.
  From Reuters July 6, 2009: In 1998, El Nino-related storms, floods, tornadoes and mudslides killed more than 2,000 people and caused billions of dollars in damage to crops, infrastructure and mines. Michelle L'Heureux, head of the U.S. Climate Prediction Center which tracks El Nino, said this version may not approach the one in 1998, the strongest weather anomaly in 150 years. The CPC is an office under the U.S. National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration.
  Here at FOX Chicago we will be looking at what impacts El Nino has historically brought for Chicago's weather patterns... including the potential for a mild winter. Below is the latest release from NOAA on the developing El Nino.

  NOAA scientists today announced the arrival of El Niño, a climate phenomenon with a significant influence on global weather, ocean conditions and marine fisheries. El Niño, the periodic warming of central and eastern tropical Pacific waters, occurs on average every two to five years and typically lasts about 12 months.
  NOAA expects this El Niño to continue developing during the next several months, with further strengthening possible. The event is expected to last through winter 2009-10.
  “Advanced climate science allows us to alert industries, governments and emergency managers about the weather conditions El Niño may bring so these can be factored into decision-making and ultimately protect life, property and the economy,” said Jane Lubchenco, Ph.D., under secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator.
  El Niño's impacts depend on a variety of factors, such as intensity and extent of ocean warming, and the time of year. Contrary to popular belief, not all effects are negative. On the positive side, El Niño can help to suppress Atlantic hurricane activity. In the United States, it typically brings beneficial winter precipitation to the arid Southwest, less wintry weather across the North, and a reduced risk of Florida wildfires.
  El Niño’s negative impacts have included damaging winter storms in California and increased storminess across the southern United States. Some past El Niños have also produced severe flooding and mudslides in Central and South America, and drought in Indonesia.
  An El Niño event may significantly diminish ocean productivity off the west coast by limiting weather patterns that cause upwelling, or nutrient circulation in the ocean. These nutrients are the foundation of a vibrant marine food web and could negatively impact food sources for several types of birds, fish and marine mammals.
  In its monthly El Niño diagnostics discussion today, scientists with the NOAA National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center noted weekly eastern equatorial Pacific sea surface temperatures were at least 1.0 degree C above average at the end of June. The most recent El Niño occurred in 2006.
  El Niño includes weaker trade winds, increased rainfall over the central tropical Pacific, and decreased rainfall in Indonesia. These vast rainfall patterns in the tropics are responsible for many of El Niño’s global effects on weather patterns.
  NOAA will continue to monitor the rapidly evolving situation in the tropical Pacific, and will provide more detailed information on possible Atlantic hurricane impacts in its updated Seasonal Hurricane Outlook scheduled for release on August 6, 2009.
  NOAA understands and predicts changes in the Earth’s environment, from the depths of the ocean to the surface of the sun, and conserves and manages our coastal and marine resources.

4th of July

  I love the 4th of July... mostly because I have the best memories of my life surrounding this magical holiday!
  ...when I was young my parents took us to parades every year... big fireworks shows from the banks of the Ohio River "Thunder over Louisivlle" to the "Stadium of Fire" in Provo, Utah to the "Freedom Festival" in the cradle of liberty in Philadelphia, PA.
  I remember my first "independent" July 4ths were celebrated with my best friend Anne (seen in the picture here)
  ...as we would sit on front lawns in southern Indiana facing the Ohio River and watch the fireworks display.
  I had my first son at 9pm on the 4th of July... yes... fireworks for sure!
  I love seeing the spectacular from the shoreline of Lake Michigan...
  For sure, this is my favorite holiday! I hope yours is a wonderful time spent celebrating our freedom!

  Spanish businessmen are in the labor market reform the solution to all problems of an economic product of economic factors in international markets, and mismanagement in the investment of the profits from the period of economic boom, despite the Employers argue that greater flexibility in the labor market, tax rebates and a wage freeze would be the solution to the current economic problems in Spain. This argument is an argument that has always had as much good as there is now a runaway financial system crisis, therefore it would be good to ask what kind of competition they want?, Against whom they want to compete?, Because if the problem is to compete against countries where workers' rights do not exist or are minimal, that would be a mistake because it competes with quality in all areas and the Spanish working class will not allow it and it is clear that reform labor market requires that employers do not have clauses whereby setback when the market returns to work to revive the economy and workers will return to its status before the reform so as to return to recover the rights lost, so I question is a labor market reform in which the working class and thus loses rights involution, is the solution?, some workers who have a precarious work in the economic field and to see their rights reduced working better?, it is quite likely not because if we reduce the rights of workers rights and we are pushing back the consolidated democratic system that has cost us since we did not get to forget that those who built these large companies that now seek reforms in the labor market were workers which these reforms seek to diminish their rights, which generated proceeds of the huge profits which were great dividends these workers were in the background and because these measures are put in the car as a fuel of low quality in the long run is just breaking engine.
  
  With regard to economic and social problem as seen from the perspective that it is clear that while the G20 will meet in London with all the pomp and pageantry involved in the politics of gestures in order to seek solutions to current problems though I do not think of solutions out there because it is clear that if solutions clearly see where the problem is that the problem is to search the millions of paper money that central banks have injected in the market and that seems to have diluted in bonuses to executives who have brought us to this situation on the other hand should be evaluated in depth the international political situation and see if the leaders are really willing to put in the same direction because:
  
  1 There is an obvious lack of cohesion between the leaders of its different product socio-economic systems still living in a globalized world.
  
  2 The measures they can take a van in the direction of solving the problems of protectionism and against the ropes that puts the working class in developed countries because these measures at the bottom to save capital and forget the main victim is the worker.
  
  And it is clear that what is going to try to save the globalized capital and its system even with the money from our taxes without giving solutions to medium and long term the company to the fund based on the scheme which is the working class.

Amy's Adventure: Houston

  I went to Houston last week... It was 85 (the record was 86) and it gave me Spring Fever Bad!
  The weather was gorgeous... and I got to meet the sports radio guys that I listen to on the internet sometimes... they broadcast on Houston's 1560am THE GAME -- you can hear it on the internet...
  My friend from Houston Tim Bradley is a die-hard listener to these guys and he's the one who told me about them... So since I was there in person --- we went and met the guys during their live broadcast! Midday guy Ken Hoffman had me on his show for a few minutes--- he also writes about food in the local paper and he's sorta obsessed with analyzing local Houston TV people (he remembered Jan Jeffcoat when she used to work in Houston) and he likes soccer and he's basically just fun to listen to (even when he's talking about nothing....) Thanks for signing my shirt Ken! Good luck with your new sidekick! Click here to get into THE GAME!
  I also wanted to meet my "favs" Sean and John... These guys are crazy and fun... I pulled a little joke on them and went up and said "Remember me? I came a long way to see you!" I've emailed them a few times so Sean eventually recognized me (sorry John!!!) It's just they always get to tease people and I thought it would be fun to see them squirm a little!!! LOL Sean lived in Chi for a while and still has family in the suburbs of Chicago. They both signed my t-shirt (which I bought at a local sports store called The Academy) I gave them an update on our long, cold, snowy Chicago winter... and how much I loved sports and the radio... and I told them I'd be happy to be their Chicago Correspondent! They gave me an awesome shout out on the radio that afternoon!!!
  I also met with Dr. Jim Siebert from the Fox Affiliate in Houston... we talked about new weather graphic implementation and Dual Pole Radar (they are one of the only other stations to have the same radio as Fox Chicago!) We compared notes on weather technology and also talked about enivronmental stuff -- my big interest Storm Water Managemet. Click here to learn more about Dr Jim!

  Amy Freeze is the Chief Meteorologist at Fox News Chicago.
  She was previously with NBC 10 Philadelphia as a Meteorologist and host of NBC 10's daily live, local show 10! She been on the plaza in New York City as a weathercaster for the "Weekend Today" show.
  She is one of a few woman in the world with a Certified Broadcast Meteorology accreditation from the American Meteorological Society.
  
  Freeze has Seals of Approval from both the AMS and National Weather Association.
  
  Amy's educational background includes a B.A. in Communications from Brigham Young University, with an emphasis on Broadcast Journalism. She has a B.S. in Geosciences from Mississippi State University, with an emphasis in Severe Weather and Forecasting. She also has a Certificate of Broadcast Meteorology from MSU.
  
  She has a Master Degree from University of Pennsylvania in Environmental Science. Amy also studied abroad in both South Africa and Germany.

  After a year of general studies at WSU, Amy took a cheerleading scholarship at Brigham Young University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Broadcasting.
  
  It was at BYU on the nightly "KBYU Report," Amy learned to shoot, edit, write, and package stories. It was also the scene of her first "weather wall" report where she actually disappeared from the green screen during the weathercast!
  
  After graduation from BYU, she spent time in Los Angeles, CA at KTLA working with both the Morning News and Marta Waller's live coverage of the O.J. Simpson trial.
  
  A member of the Radio and Television News Director Association since 1994, Amy was chosen to participate in the 1996 RTNDF/RIAS German Journalism Exchange which included study of German politics, the European Union and NATO. Before leaving Berlin, Amy produced two documentaries which aired on cable.
  
  She also studied international politics in Johannesburg during the election of Nelson Mandela.
  
  She has interviewed hundreds of entertainers and athletes - - some of her favorites are Jon Bon Jovi, Ed McMahon, Bette Midler, Glenn Close, Howie Mandel, Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe, Dick Clark, Kim Bassinger, Seth Green and William Hurt. Freeze had a cameo role on the sitcom "Scrubs" in 2005.
  
  Although she never played soccer herself she is a huge fan of Major League Soccer and was the league's first ever female sideline soccer reporter.
  
  Her love for sports and fitness led her to become a 1999 Body for Life Fitness Champion. Her fitness story can be seen in the movie Body For Life Success Stories 2. She has been featured in issues of "Energy" magazine, "Muscle Media," and "Ladies Home Journal."
  
  Freeze does donate her time speaking to school children about weather and attending charitable functions. She was the first honoary chair person for the Philadelphia Wellness Community race team, she remains the honorary chairperson for Colorado's Miles to Fight Melanoma started in 2000.
  
  Amy was born in Utah, raised in southern Indiana, and she has lived in seven states.
