Are We On the Brink of Finding a Second Earth? NASA/Harvard Teams Say “It Could Happen Anytime Now”

      RR013167

“It could happen almost any time now. We now have the technological capability to identify Earth-like planets around the smallest stars.”

David Latham -Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics

To date, Planet hunters have spotted more than 200 planets beyond our solar system, but the vast majority are hot, Jupiter-sized planets that would dwarf the Earth and are almost certainly lifeless.

Astronomers may be on the brink of discovering a second Earth-like planet, a find that would add fresh impetus to the search for extraterrestrial life, according to the US journal Science. Astronomers from six major centers, including NASA, Harvard and the University of Colorado, outline how advances in technology suggest scientists are on the verge of being able to detect the presence of small, rocky planets, much like our own, around distant stars for the first time. The planets are considered the most likely habitats for extraterrestrial life.

One technique relies on observing the shift in light coming from a star as a planet swings around it. Until recently, this “radial velocity” method has only been sensitive enough to pick up planets far more massive than Earth, but improvements now make the discovery of a second Earth highly likely, said Dave Latham, a co-author on the paper at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

“It could happen almost any time now. We have the technological capability to identify Earth-like planets around the smallest stars even now,” he said.

Earlier this year, the world’s largest and most prolific team of planet hunters, the Anglo-Australian, California and Carnegie Planet Searches ( AAPS), reported their findings of 37 exoplanets that have been discovered over the past couple of years, 7 of which were previously unreported brown dwarfs.

Depending on whose number you go by, the total number of exoplanets currently discovered is 212 or 240, the majority of which have been discovered by the AAPS and their colleagues in the California and Carnegie searches.

The method of discovery primarily implemented is studying the Doppler wobble of stars. As a planet orbits its parent star, its gravitational pull causes the star to wobble. Using the Doppler Effect, the scientists are able to determine the velocity of the planet. When the planet moves away from Earth, its star moves toward the Earth, causing it to emit shorter wavelengths, which appear bluer. The opposite is true as well; as a planet moves closer to Earth, its star moves further away, emitting longer (redder) wavelengths of light. The AAPS uses highly advanced, sensitive spectographs to record these very small wavelengths.

But there are things that Doppler searches cannot tell researchers. With Doppler readings, they are able to calculate the velocities of the planets being studied as they move towards and away from the Earth. What Doppler readings are unable tell researchers are the angles of inclination of the orbital planet to the line of sight. This is important information because by being able to calculate the angles of inclination of the orbiting planet, scientists are able to determine the actual physical size of the planet.

The AAPS has developed a technique to find the angle of inclination: transit searches. Transit searches are a relatively new technique which has only just begun giving them results within the past few years. As a planet transits in front of its parent star, passing our line of sight from Earth, scientists are able to calculate its angle of inclination, thereby determining its eccentricity (how elliptical or round its orbital path is). In the years to come, the method of transit searches should advance, resulting in more information about already discovered planets.

Although the next generation of techniques such as interferometric astrometry and direct imaging will be the most promising new methods of detection in the future study and discovery of extrasolar planets, as Chris Tinney of AAPS explains, the most successful and powerful form of study currently in use is complementing Doppler searches with transit searches. By doing so, “You can essentially know everything you can know about a planet. You know exactly its mass and its radius, which means you can work out its density,” and therefore, “you can make estimates as to whether it’s a gas giant or an ice giant planet, or whether it’s rocky.”

As these techniques develop, the smaller and smaller the extrasolar planets being discovered will become.

So when does Tinney expect an Earth-sized planet discovery, now that they’ve gotten down to Venus-sized planets when once they only found those with a mass that of Jupiter’s?

Tinney thinks that “finding a planet of Earth mass is probably a only couple of years away. But…”—and he emphasizes the “but,” pausing for a moment—“there’s always a ‘but.’” As he explains, all of the things they are finding of very low mass are moving in very short orbital periods, which means that they are orbiting close to their parent stars. So although there they are like Earth in terms of their mass and size, these planets are very unlike the Earth in terms of their orbit.

“To find an Earth-mass planet in an Earth-like orbit is just not going to happen with the Doppler technique,” Tinney states. It is simply beyond the technology currently developed. Essentially, it would mean that they would need to be performing measurements 100 times better than any technology is capable of doing.

So does this rule out the possibility of finding a habitable planet?

Not quite. There is a “trick” to planet hunting. Scientists can look for Earth-mass planets in short period orbits around lower mass stars. These types of stars are called M dwarfs and have a mass one tenth the size of the Sun, which means that the velocity signal is ten times larger, and therefore the radius at which the planet must be from the star in order to have water or liquid on its surface is much smaller. For now, it’s Tinney’s opinion that some of the recent reports about habitable planets being discovered “is more hype than reality,” but that the discovery of such planets “will come in due course.”

In fact, that’s precisely what Tinney is currently working on, aside from his AAPS commitment. He has convinced the Gemini Observatory—a collaboration of the US, Canada, UK, Australia, Brazil, and Argentina—to build a spectrograph on one of its largest class of telescopes. In order to perform the types of studies needed to find other Earth-mass planets, scientists would need to being studying the near infrared, rather than the green wavelengths of visible light. This new Gemini spectrograph, called the Precision Radial Velocity Spectrometer, will specifically be designed to do very high precision Doppler work in the near infrared, rather than the optical. Once that type of technology is developed, Tinney believes that rather than finding the occasional one or two Earth-sized planets around M dwarf stars, finding more and more “will be much more straightforward,” thereby dispelling some of the current hype and allowing scientists to gather actual statistics about these types of systems.

NASA’s mantra of “follow the water” has defined the search for extraterrestrial life on and other planets. If water is crucial for life, then the most likely sanctuaries will be planets which lie in a “habitable zone” just the right distance from a star, so that it is neither so hot that water evaporates, or so cold that it remains permanently frozen.

Dr Latham of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center said missions such as Nasa’s Kepler space observatory, which launched in early March, would have a high chance of finding Earth-like planets if they are out there.

“These are the biggest questions. Are there habitable abodes? Are we alone?” he said. “Put it like this. If we don’t find anything, I’ll have to rethink my agnosticism.”

      The H1N1 Viral Mutation

      Pragmaticism:

"Use common sense and WASH your hands slowly."

      Intuitively:

" Diseases are relative to the degree of Rigidity in the Mentality of the Individual."

      Balance:

"Be FLexIBle enough to use common sense to wash your hands. All diseases begin in the innermind."

I am currently studying a Pesticide Book on Turf & Landscaping for
an upcoming License Exam,....on June 2ND. That's when i take the exam.

In order to apply pesticides in the state of Wisconsin one must be certified & licensed with the

WDATCP (Wisconsin Dept of Agriculture, Trade & Consumer Protection)

Pesticides are any substance used to directly control pest populations. The active ingredient in the chemical compound is what destroys unwanted plants

There are Avicides(Birds) , Herbicides(Weeds), Fungicides(Fungi), and Rodenticides which are used to control the rodent population.
When utilized, there are deviations in the application, due to overspray & drifting caused by wind conditions and human error.

Not only does this harm the environmnent and humans, yet it affects every facet of life.

So although i will be certified, i will not apply, i need to know this stuff for my pay raise.....but the awareness you gain when you connect the dots is priceless. You see the struggle with humanity attempting to control nature.
The lessons in the book are invaluable indeed.

Here's the link to the invisible. The Flu strains. The H1N1 i will call it.

Pigs are being blamed for everything these days. <sigh!> My Poor Swines. I love pigs.

I tease. But i do love bacon.

Now here's the parallel. THERE ARE ALWAYS MUTATIONS

      Roaches for instance.

Pesticide resistance is the inherited ability of a pest to tolerate the TOXIC effects of a particular pesticide.

In Pest Control, roaches have a tendency to MUTATE a STRAIN in their chromosome that becomes RESISTANCE to a particular pesticide application. That susceptible individual. Pests can develop multiple resistances as well.

      This mutation benefits the organism.

In other words....the pesticide will FAIL to work any longer. The populational epidemic increases. Through evolution. So to compensate....certified pest applicators
continually diversify and become more flexible in the types of pesticides they apply. They use sprayers, powders, liquids, granules....also taking in consideration of frequency of pesticide use, amount, mixture, and chemical diversity.

Pesticide applicators learning to use FLExiBILity to their advantage. The roach population responds in check. Adaptation. Adjustment.

Now as this relates to the entire H1N1 mental scare.....BECAUSE WHAT YOU RESIST; PERSISTS....

....however speed of recovery and PHYSICAL healing is in DIRECT relation to the RIGIDITY that is clung to so deeply in the mind. Often these rigid ideas are spread from generation to generation, passed on through DNA.

Vaccinations producing resistance. And these are not always reliable. Because some viral intruders have mutated to overcome OLD FIREWALLS OF RESISTANCE.

Many "Rigid Thoughts" will be held on for unique reasons that are uniquely apparent to that particular SOUL

YET ALL DISEASES ARE CREATED IN THE MIND.

It is what YOU ALLOW TO ENTER YOUR MIND OR THAT WAS ALREADY THERE THAT CAUSED THE INITIAL UNALIGNMENT/IMBALANCE IN THINKING.

The outward manifestations just REFLECTS to you what was Obviously Happening Inward.

However flexibility is freedom. Healing and Resistance to outside viral/bacteria/diseases affects each individual differently. That's because no one can truly heal another's dis-ease....that disease is YOUR'S alone........ BUT YOUR SOUL HEALS.......YOUR OWN MIND

      ...............and YOUR BODY FOLLOWS,

Not ALL viruses and such are "BAD".......there are FRIENDLY alien-symbiotic life-forms as well.

      It's all SYNCHRONIC.

      PARALLEL

      Just connect the dots.

      BALANCE IS KEY.

      Be {{[[ FL ex I BLE ]]}}

      In the mind.
      The outward manifestations will follow.

Your collective will FEEL less of a need to spread
MENTAL EPIDEMICS THROUGH THE "AIR" WAVES LIKE WILD-FIRE.

You are behind the controls of your very own life. No one else.

Drive carefully down those many, many diverse roads if you choose.

Take that muddy&rocky&curved& bumpy&pot-holed filled road even slower and more carefully.

Don't forget to enjoy the view, though;)

3 Tomorrow's God talks with everyone, all the time.

4 Tomorrow's God is separate from nothing, but is Everywhere Present, the All That Is, the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End, the Sum Total of Everything that ever was, is now, and ever shall be.

5 Tomorrow's God is not a singular Super Being, but the extraordinary process called Life itself.

6 Tomorrow's God is ever changing.

      7 Tomorrow's God is needless.

8 Tomorrow's God does not ask to be served, but is the Servant of all of Life.

9 Tomorrow's God will be unconditionally loving, nonjudgmental, noncondemning, and unpunishing.

    • From: jeff4hemp
    • Description:

When President Obama laughed at the question on legalizing marijuana in his online town hall meeting, I beleive he committed a blunder equal to to recent comments on the Special Olympics.  Though the question was phrased to address the economic benefits of legal marijuana, it was certainly supported by patients using marijuana medicinally, and those people who assist these patients.  Does he find it funny that this may be their only source of relief and they risk prosecution from 37 states and the federal government everytime they use, or buy, or grow marijuana.  Or was he laughing at the billions of dollars that are sent to drug trafficers each year which fund the importation of dangerous drugs like herion, crack cocaine and crystal meth., and are now funding a war on our border.  When President Obama, who has used marijuana, for strictly recreational purposes in his past, laughs at people who struggle daily with the problems illegal marijuana brings, I am insulted.   President Obama used his prior marijuana usage and his little joke about "inhaling" to gain support among the left and those favoring legalization.  It is at these same people he is now laughing.  If President Obama would go to www.join-hemp.com  he would see a commonsense plan to tax marijuana that he wouldn't laugh about.

Some of my earliest memories are me watching  “Fox Thing in the Morning”   w/ Bob Sarot and Marianne Mercianno.  Countless faces have rotated in and just as many has gone away…(it reminds me of how old I have become; of how much life I have wasted). Fox news Chicago has taught me that life assures us no constants. I have to be agile; able to adapt quickly to life’s sudden demands and changes. I must become emotionally and intellectually self-sufficient, independent. I must rely on nothing and no one. Fox news Chicago has instilled and solidified within me fear.

Fear of friendship, love, rejection, intimacy, pain.

Thank you Fox News Chicago. Thank you.

      Women!!!

In the end I’m a simple man, with a simple heart and a simple dream…to be filfthy rich and know many beautiful women intimately. What’s not to love about women?, seriously even women like women. Soft skin, delicate features, silk hair, gentle bodies, WOW!!     Truly, women are a gift from the Gods, a gift and a curse.

Life; I breathe and I live. Standing at the edge of a frozen over snow buried lake. Middle of the day sun blasting blindingly above, temperature 7 or 8 degrees with wind-chill. The wind active, forceful, blowing against my face, the flesh numb. The harsh and persistent draft generates momentum as it speeds across the flat white expanse before me. I face the wind; through conditioning the air is no more then a tingling and gentle prickling against my skin. Frozen oxygen races up my nostrils, with a deep inhale unconsciously my eyes shut, and my lungs expand with life.

      Today this day is mine.

Today I am graced with life…I am blessed with the love and support of my generous and trustworthy family and friends. I am allotted a shelter from the elements. My belly rarely is allowed to fast. I have the warmth of my TV and of my blanket. Also I have my health, more or less. Also I have the opportunity to express myself here, I am truly grateful for it.

I am granted life and I appreciate it. I appreciate it and its infinite possibilities.

      STIMULUS PACKAGE

      By Lavelle D. Hands

The Obama Stimulus plan WILL NOT WORK FOR THE AVERAGE AMERICAN.   His plan in my opinion, will and have put many people out on the streets and will bankrupt this country.  If he continues to put all the country borrowing money at the top and it’s blocked off from the bottom, we all suffer.  Since we the people, have to pay the interest on the $800 billion plus dollar loan, we should receive some of it directly.  I have a Stimulus plan that I know will work for the majority of the average American people. People will be able to keep their homes, jobs, cars, help the local businesses, cities, counties, townships, states and also bailout the banking & auto industries.

      MY STIMULUS PLAN

Hear me out...There aren’t 800 billion people in the world, so we will not go over the borrowing amount of the U.S. Government. With the monies left over, it should be divided equally amongst the States. If the Government continues bailing out private institutions and not its citizens who makes up the foundation of this country, this country will collapse. Start bailing out the people and build up U.S. foundation.  Remove worry and stress from their life’s and I guarantee with my package, we will bail out the failing institutions.  For more Info, contact me.

Let me know what YOU think.

  • My Beautiful Lake

    • From: thelandscaper
    • Description:

The City of Chii and the Olympics

Most would assume the Olympics are wanted. It seems Mayor Richard Dailey is the sole campaigner for title of chosen city.

Where once was cheering and welcoming crowds, the IOC is now greeted with mediocre enthusiasm and moderate excitement.

      The lake

There is a lake by my house that I often look across, meditatively. It is a big lake, not huge, but a good size body of water. People go here for recreation and fun. Its waves are soothing, they re-freshen the air. It is a calming sight.

Recently, I came the realization it is not really a lake of water, but rather, a gathering of run-off. A lake of run-off. Rain falls on the streets, lawns, parking lots, and other neighboring grounds, homogenizing with the surfaces’ oils, animal waste, man-made and inappropriately disposed of toxins, dirt, germs, and garbage. The mixture of rainwater and surface grim collect at this reservoir.

My lake is not a lake of water but a collected run-off. It is no wonder the water is not transparent but murky, a dirty green with a hint of yellow. Poor fish and marine life condemned to that sort of environment, confined in such a grotesque world.

      The Lake of Run-off

The Olympics will bring in massive revenues, incalculable press, much of the heavily hungered for business, countless other rewards, benefits, improvements. Look at Atlanta, Beijing, both gained greatly from the esteemed privilege of hosting the Olympics.

But it will also bring pollution, both noise and smog. And foreigners, how we loathe them. Congestion to an already gridlocked town. It will bring with it its increasing social deaf/muteness “no matter how devastatingly the world falls apart around us we will have our tournaments” (protest). Look at Atlanta, Beijing, both have felt the effects of the run-off collected from having to play host for the Olympics.

We have our hands full keeping our city/county/state/country in check, under control. We don’t need any more drama. Save the drama for your baby mama.

      Baby Mama

A boy is walking home from the market. His mother gave him a long list of items to bring back. At the market the child realizes the chore is more then he can handle. He was not given enough money, he can’t find many of the items, the load is heavy, the trip home is long, the hot sun is out, several bags rip along the way. His hands are full and he is having a hard time.

Along the way, a very rich businessman, bent on creating an image of philanthropy and community involvement for himself and his business, sees the boy (the oppotunity) from his car. The man realizes that although the task for the boy is difficult, the boy does not give up.

The wealthy man, seeking to gain public appeal, decides to reward the boy’s determination and will. Quickly, the man goes to a nearby market and puts together two enormous gift baskets. Each basket two times the size of all the groceries the boy is currently lugging home. By the time man catches up to the boy, the boy had traveled less then a few hundred yards, and he was not even halfway home. The man gives the boy the two giant gift baskets. Then the man drives off.

Now the boy not only has to think of a way of getting all the groceries he had trouble with at first home, but these two heavy and awkward baskets as well.

The boy is Chicago. The Olympics are the rich businessman. How can we make effective use of the more we stand to make, when we can hardy handle the load now.

But the boy is poor, and will not deny the gift baskets. An indulgence of this magnitude does not come along often. The boy decides he has to eat their contents along the way, then once the baskets are empty he can them to carry the groceries home. The boy will take advantage of the banquet, greedily. The rest of the family, the household will have to wait a little longer for the groceries, or what’s left of them anyway.

      We are The People

The wealthy businessman does not care about the boy, his family, his burdens or even his safe arrival home. Rich businessman only care about themselves.

The boy should have prepared better. Most of the boy’s problems could have been avoided by simply reading the grocery list ahead of time. The boy does not think about his family, instead he feeds his own gluttony and savors in the gift baskets alone.

The mother should have taken better care of the boy. She should have thought of possible contingencies. She should have understood the boy’s abilities, capacities, needs.

      We are the People

I hope we get the Olympics in 2016.

It will inject The City and the Suburb (don’t get me started on the suburbs) with life and spirit. The City will be alive and vibrant.

The Olympics will be catalyst to the destruction and devastation which will (unless we act)  inevitably grip hold The City Of Chii and its Crook County

Here is a gathering of 15 free webcast tutorials on MRDS. The Microsoft Robotics Developer Studio is a Windows-based environment for robot control and simulation. You can Download MRDS 2008 Express Edition Without paying a cent.

Be sure to click on the following site to view a library of videos: Microsoft Robotics Developer Studio

Note: If you want to "deep dive" into robotics theories and concepts, you should check out Stanford's Introduction to Robotics.

      * DSS (Decentralized Software Services) Is the services architecture, and it is a companion to CCR. This is based on Service Oriented Architecture. To assemble applications that may be distributed and modular. This enables you to execute your code in the processing work horses and use anywhere in the distributed environment. The DSS makes it easy to access, and respond to, a robot's state via a Web browser or Windows-based application. This allows real-time monitoring of robotics sensors and real-time response to motors and actuators.

      * CCR (Concurrency and Coordination Runtime) - makes asynchronous programming simple. The CCR makes it simple to author programs to handle asynchronous input from multiple robotics sensors and output to motors and actuators. With the use of CCR, we don't need to do any manual threads management. This can be expressly beneficial in handling concurrency and partial failure. CCR has a failure handling mechanism called Causalities. This is in essence a generalization of Try / Catch for multiple threads. But this is for many machines and processes working in synchronous fashion. This is the base of Robotics architecture by Microsoft. You can even use this component for the applications running on a PC instead of a robot. CCR is available in the form of a dynamic link library that may be used by any .net language.

      * VPL (Microsoft Visual Programming Language) Is a visual programming tool that is used for creating and debugging robot applications, web-based and windows-based interfaces.

      * VSE (Visual Simulation Environment) Allows one to simulate the behavior of robots in a virtual world using NVIDIA PhysX technology (3D engine) that includes advanced physics.

The Runtime environment Has two basic components: the CCR and the DSS. The runtime is based on a lightweight REST-oriented services model. Making it REST based has made the services and applications to be independent of each other. They may be on the same machine or distributed across different machines connected through any method. When we say REST based, This means that the resources should be available by query strings. These services are available as resources to the other services, applications or User Interfaces. This is, in essence, how Microsoft is able to promise low coupling between services. The Runtime supports from 8-bit to 32-bit robots. These robots may range from Toy Robots to Industrial Robots.

Microsoft VPL Makes it possible for one to create and debugrobotics programs simply. All you need to do is drag and drop blocks that represent services, and connect them. It is also possible to take a collection of connected blocks and reuse them as a single block somewhere else in the program. VPL follows the Observer Pattern. This implies that it is not based on Control flow but on data flow which enables some program elements to get executed when some data arrives. VPL provides a model-driven approach to develop and orchestrate services.

Easily Simulate Robotics applications using realistic 3D simulated models. Since testing with real robots is often expensive, it saves money to start out in a simulated environment first and then move to real robots once the concepts have been proven to work. Microsoft Visual Simulation Environment (VSE) is based on Microsofts XNA Framework and the rendering engine uses AGEIA PhysX Technology from AGEIA Technologies Inc.. AGEIA Technologies Inc. Is a pioneer in hardware-accelerated physics, enabling real-world physics simulation for robot models. PhysX simulations can also be accelerated using AGEIA hardware. These simulations can be recorded and saved as XML files and played back over and over again.

Main Features of MS Robotics Developer Studio:

      * Develop using a wide selection of programming languages

MRDS allows you to access the runtime services using these programming languages: C# and Visual Basic .NET, JScript, and IronPython

      * Microsoft Robotics Developer Studio allows one to use numerous packages to add other services to the suite.

      Those other services include:
      O Soccer Simulation
      O Sumo Competition by Microsoft
O a community-developed Maze Simulator which is a program to create worlds with walls that may be explored by a virtual robot

      Sample Applications:

      * Princeton University's DARPA Urban Grand Challenge autonomous car entry was programmed entirely with MRDS.

      * In 2008 Microsoft launched a simulated robotics competition named RoboChamps using MRDS, 4 challenges were available : maze, sumo, urban, and mars rover. The simulated environment and robots used by the competition were created by SimplySim and the competition was sponsored by KIA Motors.

PAUL RODGERS LEAVES QUEEN - TO REJOIN BAD COMPANY FOR 10 CONCERT TOUR

Paul Rodgers, Queen Split: “It Was Never a Permanent Arrangement”

Paul Rodgers has revealed that he and Queen are parting ways. The singer told Billboard.com that after almost five years as the group’s frontman — and a summer tour scheduled with the reunited Bad Company — he is leaving Queen amicably. “My arrangement with [Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor] was similar to my arrangement with Jimmy [Page] in the Firm in that it was never meant to be a permanent arrangement,” Rodgers said.

Queen + Paul Rodgers was born in late 2004 to perform at the U.K. Music Hall of Fame Awards. The collaboration went on to produce two world tours, two live albums and a studio album, 2008’s Rock the Cosmos. The studio album was the band’s first since 1995’s Made In Heaven, which featured the last recordings of Freddie Mercury. Rodgers said his time with Queen was “an achievement” and didn’t rule out the possibility of perhaps rejoining May and Taylor in the future: “It’s kind of an open book, really. If they approach me to do something for charity, for instance, or something like that… I’d be very much into doing that, for sure.”

Rodgers will reunite with Bad Company for a 10-concert run starting June 17th. The band will also release a live DVD, Bad Company – Hard Rock Live, on August 8th.

      Whitney Houston is coming back!!!...

While it has been a while since we've heard any new material from Miss Houston (2002 to be exact), we can expect to see a brand new album from the golden-voiced crooner sometime this year.  Currently, the CD has yet to be titled, but I hear she's working with everyone from R.Kelly to Dianne Warren to John Legend and maybe a few surprise guests.  But I for one am just estatic over the thought of Whitney finally coming back to reclaim her glory days.

So far, there's word that the first single off the album will be called "I Didn't Know My Own Strength".

Let's all hope this comeback turns out to be a positive turning point.

      Go, Whitney!

BONO AND HIS ELVIS POEM ..........

Bono’s ‘bonkers’ poem about Elvis Presley to be broadcast on Radio 4

It is better known as the BBC’s primary repository for serious news and comment, but Radio 4 is to enter uncharted territory next week when it broadcasts a bizarre 14-minute poem about Elvis Presley written by Bono, the U2 frontman.

The Irish singer has long been a professed superfan of the king of rock’n’roll, and is thought to have written the rhyme, American David, in 1994.

The BBC has billed it as “delivered plainly, but intensely, by Bono. Some lines are purposefully quintessential Elvis clichés while others make listeners view Elvis in a new light.”

The recording is thought to have been made two years ago by Ten Alps, Bob Geldof’s production company, as part of a Radio 2 programme exploring the history of Sun Records, which released Presley’s first records.

The epic poem has been mixed over the top of various Elvis tracks, as well as popular culture recordings from the past 50 years.

The poem was published in the band’s fan magazine, Propaganda, in 1995 but has never been publicly aired in full.

When it does go out on Radio 4, at 11pm on May 13, it will be accompanied with a warning about its language.

WARNER MUSIC SALES FALL ... THE CONTINUING CHANGE IN HOW WE BUY MUSIC

Warner Music's losses widen as sales fall short

Warner Music Group on Thursday posted a wider quarter loss as recorded music sales declined more than expected.

The world's third largest music company posted a net loss of $68 million, or 45 cents a share in its fiscal second quarter ended March 31 compared with a year-earlier loss of $37 million, or 25 cents a share.

The company booked $33 million in charges for items such as the declining value of investments in digital music start-up companies Lala and Imeem.

Like other music companies, Warner Music is struggling with shrinking sales of recorded music as fewer fans buy albums in physical CD format.

The transition to downloaded music has led to a decline in revenue throughout the industry as fans increasingly buy lower-priced individual songs from Web retailers like Apple Inc's iTunes Music Store.

Digital music sales rose 6 percent to $173 million, or 26 percent of total revenue in quarter.

Warner Music also blamed the weak sales on a light record release schedule and the turbulent global economy.

It said that fiscal 2009 results would be "back-end weighted" due to the timing of its music releases.

Warner Music's biggest sellers for the quarter included albums from Seal, Jason Mraz, Peter Fox and rock band Nickelback's as well as the Twilight movie soundtrack.
